“They don’t need our help—they’re gifted, they’ll be fine!” How many times have I heard that statement, have I uttered that statement? Well, it couldn’t be further from the truth. After working closely with gifted and twice-exceptional children, I’ve quickly learned that “I’m fine” is often code for “I need you.” Words rarely spoken yet often screamed through their actions and inactions. While it’s important never to underestimate their abilities and need for independence, it’s equally important never to overestimate their need for compassion, encouragement, and guidance. Gifted children need our unconditional support—with or without the words.
